You may have a million ideas. Maybe you can’t think of one.

What is a blog niche?
First, why does this even matter?
Isn’t the point of a blog to share your opinions with the world?
So why not just…share your ideas as they occur to you?
Basically, why limit yourself to one niche?
No one will come knocking on your door if you don’t adhere to your speciality.
Some others have had success with a more random approach.
But this is usually the case:
Your audience may not be interested in all of your passions.
No one will read your blog until you make yourself the topic (which is feasible).
If you stick to one topic, readers will likely be engaged in all of your pieces.

What is a niche?
A blog niche is a topic you’ll write about (or create content for).
Everyone has a distinct idea of what constitutes a “particular” concern.
My first blog was a video game blog. We battled to expand it for a few years.
Where we went wrong:
We tried to generate stuff for all gamers.
So, do tens of thousands of other outlets, bloggers, and YouTubers
So, what was the lesson here?
To choose a blog speciality, you must first identify your target demographic.

What I mean is:
Instead of writing for every gamer, we wanted to target a specific demographic.
Gaming is a huge business.
It would have been amazing to get even a little piece of that.
Instead, we may have owned a single game kind.
MMORPGs, platforms, RTS, FPS, etc.
We were the first UK site to have the Oculus Rift, but VR content was scarce.
For example, I’m often asked whether tech is a suitable speciality.
If I were starting a tech blog, I’d investigate the various types of buyers.
- Engineers & musicians
These examples also suit many other sectors.
A freelance blog might only target graphic designers.Or a personal finance blog might aid freelancers.
Your subject may be too specific…
If you select a unique subject, you should be OK.
For example, I think a blog for food trucks would be detailed enough.

How to find a speciality if you’re stuck
So, a niche…
How did that niche form?
Now is the time to brainstorm.
You should verify your ideas eventually, but that’s for the next part.
For now, don’t bother about logistics and just generate a lengthy list of topics.
Some practical approaches to come up with ideas are:
Your abode. Look around you and see if anything sparks an idea.
The same principle — think about your daily routine and see what comes to mind.
- Read blogs.
- eBay, and other retailers (look at the popular products, categories, or your order history).

Now it’s time to confirm your list.
Now you should have a few ideas on what to write about.
Then you need to test them to determine the most excellent fit for your site.
Finding your exact speciality requires balancing three factors:
How enthusiastic are you about it?
How enthused others are about the issue.
Whether or if the subject Venn Diagram is profitable.
Pick a subject you love and offer things to generate money…
But if no one else wants it, you’ll never get an audience or make money.
Choosing a topic that many people enjoy but not you will be tricky.
Pick a subject that you like and has a large audience…

But everything is not lost.
After the first exhilaration of establishing a blog, two things will help you stay going:
Question 1: It’s easy to be enthusiastic about a subject once you start seeing results.
If you run out of steam, you can always hire more authors or invite guests.
Question 2: Does anybody else want to read about this?
If you get beyond the initial enquiry, you know your blog’s speciality is appealing.
Now it’s time to see whether anybody else wants to participate in the fun.
Thankfully, the solution is less soul-searching and more research.
So how can you know whether your blog niche has a following?

Start by entering niches into Google Trends.
Start using the free Google Trends tool
This shows two key data points:
Whether or not your topic is really searched
It’s not the most in-depth study, but it’s a beautiful place to start, and it’s simple to use.
All you have to do is:
- Consider your niche’s primary term(s) (s)
- Google Trends
- Fill in your phrase (s)
- Paleo Diet Trends
While interest in the paleo diet has dropped, it remains a hot issue.

Do some keyword research (it’s easy!)
OK, now you have a general notion of your niche’s popularity and momentum.
With relative numbers, Google Trends isn’t ideal (the critical word is “trends”).
Defined as how many people are looking for phrases in your field right now.

Keyword research tells you how many people search for phrases (keywords) in your niche monthly.
Hence, you must:
Begin by generating a list of relevant keywords.
Using the keto diet as an example, some excellent beginning points are:
- Ketogenic diet
- Keto meals
- Keto review
Then enter those thoughts into a keywords research tool – KWFinder is a fantastic free alternative.
When you do this, the tools will recommend similar terms, allowing you to fully explore your niche:
You want a few thousand monthly searches for your main keywords.
It’s tough to come up with blog post ideas if nobody searches for them.
Can I earn money in this niche?
If everything goes well, you should now know:
- Whether you can stay to the speciality.
- If others share your interest.
Now it’s time to see whether you can earn money from this.
If you’re creative and have a following, you can make money from practically any niche.
As a result, this is perhaps the least essential issue.
But clever monetisation can’t change one thing:
Specific blog niches will always produce more money than others.
